Among all the rituals of Durga Puja, there is one that lasts less than an hour yet draws some of the biggest crowds and the loudest conch shells and drums. It is Sandhi Puja. If you are asking what Sandhi Puja is, when it happens and why people wait for the exact moment, this guide explains it in simple words.
In 2026, Maha Ashtami is on Monday 19 October. By the Kolkata reckoning, Ashtami ends at 10:51 AM and Sandhi Puja is observed from about 10:27 to 11:15 AM. Note: dates and times are provisional and follow the Kolkata / West Bengal reckoning. Verify with a local panchang (рддрд┐рдерд┐рдпрд╛рдБ рд╕реНрдерд╛рдиреАрдп рдкрдВрдЪрд╛рдВрдЧ рд╕реЗ рдорд┐рд▓рд╛рдПрдБ).
What is Sandhi Puja?
Sandhi means a junction or meeting point. Sandhi Puja is the special worship performed at the junction of two tithis: the very end of Ashtami and the very beginning of Navami. Because both days are sacred, this brief window is considered especially powerful in Durga Puja traditions of Bengal, where it is treated as a central ritual of the festival.
Historical Bengali manuals on Durga worship describe it among the important rites of the festival. Today the same practice is followed in pandals and in family pujas across West Bengal and wherever Bengalis celebrate.
The 48-minute convention
The usual rule is that Sandhi Puja lasts about 48 minutes: the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. Two festival and panchang sources we checked describe the window in the same way, and the number 24 plus 24 is simply a convention for the junction.
It is easy to see this with the 2026 timing. Ashtami ends at 10:51 AM in Kolkata. Twenty-four minutes before that is 10:27 AM, and twenty-four minutes after is 11:15 AM. That gives the window 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM on Monday 19 October 2026. The exact minutes can differ from city to city, so check your own panchang.
Why is it important? The story behind it
According to the traditional story, the goddess took her fierce form, Chamunda, at the climax of the battle with the demon forces and defeated the generals Chanda and Munda at this very junction between Ashtami and Navami. The ritual is therefore a remembrance of that moment, when Shakti is believed to be at her most powerful.
Devotees view it as a time for courage, protection of family and removal of fear. These are beliefs (manyata), not promises of results. What is certain is the social side: families, neighbours and visitors come together, and the pandal becomes quiet, then erupts with sound.
What happens during Sandhi Puja
Details vary between pandals and families, but you will usually see these elements:
- 108 lamps: 108 oil lamps (diyas) are lit and placed around the idol. Number 108 is considered sacred and matches the 108 names of the goddess. You can read those in our Durga Maa ke 108 naam article.
- 108 lotus flowers: traditionally, 108 lotuses are offered one by one. In places where lotuses are hard to find, other flowers may be used, as per family custom.
- Offerings: fruit, garlands, and sometimes bel leaves and new clothes are presented to the goddess.
- Sound: the dhak (drum), conch and bells are played loudly to fill the atmosphere with energy.
- Chanting: the priest chants verses from the Chandi (Devi Mahatmya) and special mantras. For a deeper look at those verses see Durga Saptashati mantra.

- Maha Ashtami: Monday 19 October 2026
- Ashtami tithi ends: about 10:51 AM (Kolkata reckoning)

A simple home version
You do not need a big setup to observe Sandhi Puja at home. A short, calm version can be:
- Bathe and wear clean clothes before 10:00 AM.
- Light a few lamps. Many families light 9, 21 or 108 lamps, depending on space and tradition.
- Offer flowers and a simple bhog such as fruit or sweets.
- Chant the goddess’s names or play a recording of the Chandi verses.
- Finish with the Durga aarti and share the prasad.
If you follow a family priest, ask him for the exact steps. Keep the flame away from curtains and children for safety.
Tips for visitors at pandals
- Reach the pandal early and plan around the 10:27 AM start. Roads in Kolkata can be crowded on Ashtami morning.
- Keep phones silent and avoid blocking the view of the idol while taking photos.
- Wear comfortable footwear and carry water. The morning is often warm and the queues are long.
- Respect volunteers and the priest. Follow the line and the security instructions.
- Plan your day around the other big events: read about Durga Puja and how the days connect with Mahalaya.
