Kanyashree Prakalpa (K1, K2): Amount, Eligibility, Apply

Kanyashree Prakalpa is a West Bengal government scheme that gives cash support to girls so they stay in education and do not marry before 18. K1 is a yearly scholarship of Rs 1,000 for unmarried girls aged 13 to 18, and K2 is a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 at age 18 for girls who are still studying or in a vocational course. A related benefit, K3, supports girls in postgraduate study through the SVMCM portal.

Who is eligible for K1 and K2?

  • The girl must be unmarried.
  • K1: age 13 to 18, studying in Class VIII or above in a recognised school or equivalent.
  • K2: turned 18, unmarried, and engaged in an academic course or a vocational/technical/sports course.
  • West Bengal resident.
  • The scheme also provides for girls with special needs, orphans and girls in juvenile justice homes.

What about the income limit?

Older official pages on the Kanyashree site state that family annual income must be Rs 1,20,000 or less, with exemptions for girls with special needs, orphans and girls in J. J. Homes. Other sources say the income cap was later removed so that all girls could apply. I could not confirm the current rule from an official page, so ask your school’s Kanyashree nodal teacher which rule applies before you collect income papers.

How the money is paid

The money goes by direct transfer to a bank account in the girl’s name. K1 is a yearly payment while the girl continues her studies, and K2 is a single payment after she turns 18 if she is unmarried and still engaged in study or a vocational course. A girl who gets K2 and goes on to postgraduate study can apply for K3 through the SVMCM portal.

How to apply

Kanyashree applications are handled through the school, college or institution where you study, which registers girls on the Kanyashree portal. The exact day-to-day process can change, so use these steps as a general guide and ask your institution for the current form.

  1. Ask your school or college Kanyashree nodal teacher for the current application form and the dates it accepts forms.
  2. Open a savings account in your own name if you do not have one.
  3. Fill in the form accurately and attach the supporting documents the school asks for.
  4. Submit it at school. The institution uploads and verifies the data on the Kanyashree portal.
  5. Keep the acknowledgement or ID the school gives you.
  6. For K2, apply again around your 18th birthday as the school instructs.
  7. For K3, register on the SVMCM portal (svmcm.wbhed.gov.in); you first verify your K2 details, then follow the fresh application steps.

Documents commonly asked for

The official pages I could read did not list the documents, so this is a general checklist. Confirm with your school.

  • Proof of age (school record or birth certificate)
  • Bank passbook in the girl’s name
  • Proof of study such as a school or college certificate
  • Income proof only if the income cap applies
  • Disability or orphan certificate where relevant

K3: Kanyashree for postgraduate girls

K3 is part of the SVMCM family of scholarships. Per the SVMCM FAQ, the rule is at least 45 percent marks in graduation in Science, Arts or Commerce, no gap year, and no family income criterion. Open or distance university students are not eligible. Application dates change each year and are announced on the SVMCM portal.

Deadlines

Kanyashree forms are collected at specified times through the academic year. I did not find a single official date for the current cycle. Please ask your school and check the Kanyashree portal for the current deadline.

Common mistakes

  • Applying after marriage. The scheme is for unmarried girls.
  • Wrong date of birth between school record and form.
  • Bank account in a parent’s name or one that is inactive.
  • Skipping the K2 application at 18 because K1 was received.
  • Using an agent. The scheme is free and handled through the school.

Kanyashree is simple if you start early: keep age proof and a personal bank account ready, and work with your school’s nodal teacher. For postgraduate study, remember to use the SVMCM portal for K3.
