How the WPL works
The Women’s Premier League is the BCCI’s franchise T20 league for women. Teams play each other in a league stage, and the table-topper goes straight to the final. The next two teams play an eliminator, and the winner of that match joins the table-topper in the final. Because of this format, a team that finishes first has a real advantage, but Delhi Capitals show it is not a guarantee: they have topped or nearly topped the table several times and still lost in the final.
The teams in the league
Five franchises have played in every season: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz. Each team is allowed foreign players, which is why names like Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Devine are among the Players of the Series. Check the official WPL website or BCCI for squad and auction details.
Where the finals have been played
Two finals were at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (2023 and 2025), one at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi (2024), and one in Vadodara (2026). Venues are decided by the BCCI each year, so the next season may use different cities.
Awards beyond the title
Apart from the Player of the Series, the league gives the Orange Cap to the leading run-scorer and the Purple Cap to the leading wicket-taker, plus an Emerging Player award. We have kept this page focused on winners and runners-up, since that is what most people search for. If you need the cap winners for a particular season, check the official WPL site.
Quick facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Organiser | BCCI |
| First season | 2023 |
| Seasons completed | 4 (as of October 2026) |
| Most successful teams | Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2 each) |
| Teams that lost every final | Delhi Capitals (4 finals, 4 defeats) |
Why the Player of the Series can come from a non-finalist
The Player of the Series (also called MVP or Player of the Tournament) is chosen on points earned across the whole league, not on the final alone. Deepti Sharma in 2024 and Sophie Devine in 2026 both won it for their performances across the league stage. So a player from a team that did not reach the final can still win it.
What to remember for exams
- First WPL winner: Mumbai Indians (2023).
- First WPL champion captain: Harmanpreet Kaur.
- RCB won their first women’s title in 2024 under Smriti Mandhana.
- Delhi Capitals have reached the final every year but are yet to win.
The WPL has quickly become a major event in women’s cricket in India. If you are preparing for a competitive exam, remember the winner, runner-up and venue of each season in a table like the one above. We will update this page when the next season finishes.
Exam and quiz tips
Quiz questions usually ask for the first winner, the number of titles, or a particular season’s Player of the Series. A simple trick is to remember the pattern: MI, RCB, MI, RCB. The winners alternate every year, and Delhi are always the runners-up.
