UP Rooftop Solar Subsidy

Solar Rooftop Subsidy in Uttar Pradesh: UPNEDA Top-Up

In Uttar Pradesh, a home can get the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 plus a state subsidy of Rs 15,000 per kW, capped at Rs 30,000, under the UP Solar Energy Policy 2022. That adds up to a maximum of Rs 1,08,000 for a 3 kW system. You apply through the national portal and the UPNEDA solar rooftop portal, and your local DISCOM does the inspection and net metering. Subsidy in UP: central plus state

System sizeCentral subsidyState subsidyTotal
1 kWRs 30,000Rs 15,000Rs 45,000
2 kWRs 60,000Rs 30,000Rs 90,000
3 kW and aboveRs 78,000Rs 30,000 (capped)Rs 1,08,000

The Rs 15,000 per kW and Rs 30,000 cap come from the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy 2022, which describes a grant for grid-connected rooftop solar in private homes in addition to central assistance. The policy ran for five years from 2022. To see whether the grant is still being paid, I looked at solar vendor pages that mirror the UPNEDA state subsidy lists; they show list number 68 dated 24 September 2026, covering 34,060 applicants and about Rs 102 crore of state subsidy. That suggests payments continue, but those lists are republished by a private company, so confirm on the UPNEDA site (the ‘What’s New’ section) and with the helpline before you plan around it.

Why UP is a big market

MNRE data given in the Lok Sabha showed Uttar Pradesh with 4.21 lakh installations and about 4.25 lakh benefiting households by 20 March 2026, third among states. By mid-July 2026, UPNEDA’s director said the state had crossed 6,74,393 domestic rooftop plants, moving ahead of Maharashtra into second place. The state has more than 7,000 solar companies working, according to the same report. For a household, this means there is a large pool of experienced vendors, but also that you should be careful about quality, because not every installer is equally good.

Who is eligible?

  • A residential electricity consumer in UP, with a connection from one of the state DISCOMs.
  • Owner of a roof that can host solar panels.
  • No earlier solar subsidy taken for the same connection.
  • Systems installed by an empanelled or registered vendor.

The state DISCOMs are PVVNL (west UP), MVVNL (Lucknow and central UP), DVVNL (Agra and south), PuVVNL (Varanasi, Prayagraj and east) and KESCO (Kanpur city). Find yours on your electricity bill.

How to apply in Uttar Pradesh

  1. Register on the national portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, DISCOM, consumer number, mobile number and email. UPNEDA’s solar rooftop portal is also used for state-level applications and tracking.
  2. Choose a registered vendor and ask for a quotation. UPNEDA lists empanelled vendors on its site.
  3. Submit the online application with ID and property details. The DISCOM reviews it and may schedule a site inspection.
  4. After approval, the vendor installs the system.
  5. Upload plant details and apply for net metering. The DISCOM installs the net meter and issues commissioning.
  6. Submit bank details and a cancelled cheque. The central subsidy follows within about 30 days of this step, as per the national portal; the state subsidy is released as per the UPNEDA subsidy lists.

The exact sequence on the UPNEDA portal may differ slightly from what I have written, so use the ‘How to Apply’ guide there.

Documents

UPNEDA’s portal has a page named ‘Documents Required for Online Application’, but I could not read its contents. Expect to need your latest electricity bill, an ID, bank details with a cancelled cheque and some proof of your roof. Ask your vendor for the current checklist.

Net metering in UP

The 2022 policy allows net metering for grid-connected rooftop systems on private homes, and also for government and educational buildings. Under the policy, the aim is that surplus energy exported is adjusted against what you import, so your bill falls to the extent your solar covers your use. UPNEDA’s portal says surplus power can be fed into the grid. The exact limits, fees and settlement rules are set by the UP Electricity Regulatory Commission and your DISCOM, so ask them for the current rule. See our net metering guide for the general process.

Practical tips

  • Use the UPNEDA helplines when your application is stuck: 15555 (the national PM Surya Ghar helpline; 155243 is also listed by UPNEDA, so verify it on the official site) for PM Surya Ghar, and the toll-free complaints number 1800 180 0005 listed on the portal.
  • Do not accept a quote that adds a ‘subsidy processing fee’ not mentioned on the portal.
  • Keep the commissioning certificate and the application number; subsidy lists are searched by application number.
  • Apply early. State subsidy has historically been limited by budget or quotas.

Conclusion

Uttar Pradesh is one of the best states for rooftop solar, with a state top-up of up to Rs 30,000 on top of the central Rs 78,000. Before you pay a vendor, check the current UPNEDA notice and ask your vendor to show that the state subsidy is still being credited for new applications. A short call to the helpline can save you a lot of trouble.

Before you sign with a vendor

Ask for the application number once you register, and check that the quote names the capacity in kW, the panel and inverter makes, the warranty period and who handles the net meter and subsidy claim. Ask the vendor to confirm in writing that the state subsidy applies to your application date, since state schemes can stop when the budget or quota runs out. Compare at least two or three quotes from vendors listed on the portal, and avoid paying the full amount in advance.
