Durga Puja in Kolkata is less a festival than an open-air art gallery that takes over the whole city. There are pandals on every lane, dhaak drums at every turn and crowds that last all night. UNESCO added “Durga Puja in Kolkata” to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021. With thousands of pandals to choose from, the real question is where to begin. This guide splits the best Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata by area (North, Central, South and Salt Lake/East), and adds heritage pujas, metro tips, crowd timing, safety notes and four pandal-hopping routes.

How to Read This List
Themes are often kept secret or changed until the last days, and websites disagree with each other. So we follow one rule: a 2026 theme is mentioned only when at least two separate reports agree. For every other pandal we give only the club, the area and what it is known for (heritage, idol style or past reputation). This is a curated visitor guide, not an official ranking. Check each club’s social media page for the latest before you go.
Pandals with Confirmed 2026 Themes
| Pandal | Area | Reported 2026 theme |
|---|---|---|
| Sreebhumi Sporting Club | Lake Town, north-east Kolkata | Replica of Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal, with its honeycomb-window facade |
| Santosh Mitra Square | Lebutala, central Kolkata | Theme based on 150 years of Vande Mataram |
| Ekdalia Evergreen Club | Ekdalia Road, Gariahat/Ballygunge | Replica of Gujarat’s Somnath Temple |
| Suruchi Sangha | New Alipore, south Kolkata | Lotus (padma) theme |
| Kumartuli Park Sarbojanin | Kumartuli, north Kolkata | The journey of the Ganga, from Gangotri to the sea |
For the remaining pandals, 2026 themes either do not match across sources or appear in only one, so we describe them by identity alone below.
Heritage and Bonedi Bari Pujas
If you want history as well as spectacle, visit the old family pujas:
- Sabarna Roy Choudhury family, Barisha: according to Wikipedia, the family has worshipped Durga at its ancestral home since 1610, making it possibly the oldest puja in the Kolkata area.
- Shobhabazar Rajbari: said to have been started by Nabakrishna Deb in 1757. It is among the best-known family pujas of north Kolkata.
Bonedi bari pujas usually offer tradition, a thakur dalan and old rituals instead of big-budget lighting. Visiting hours are often limited and the premises small, so mornings and afternoons work best. Rules differ from family to family, so enquire first.
North Kolkata Pandals
North Kolkata is often called the memory of the festival: narrow lanes, old neighbourhoods and traditional ekchala idols.
- Bagbazar Sarbojanin: known for the traditional “sabeki” style, an ekchala idol and daker saaj (silvery foil decoration). It feels like an old-style Bengali puja rather than a modern theme.
- Kumartuli Park: close to the idol-makers’ quarter, so the mood here is artistic. (2026 theme in the table above.)
- Ahiritola Sarbojanin: an old club in the Bagbazar-Kumartuli belt, remembered for its traditional feel.
- Hatibagan Sarbojanin and Hatibagan Nabinpally: useful stops for seeing several pujas in one busy part of town.
- Telengabagan, Sikdar Bagan, Nalin Sarkar Street: many guides count these among north Kolkata’s theme-based pandals. Themes can change, so check the club page first.
- Chorbagan Sarbojanin: a familiar north Kolkata club.
Central Kolkata Pandals
- College Square: the reflection of the lights in the tank after dark is the draw, and it is a favourite spot for photography. (Some guides mention a Mount Kailash-inspired theme this year, but treat that as unconfirmed.)
- Santosh Mitra Square (Lebutala): famous for large-scale themes and light-and-sound presentation. (2026 theme in the table above.)
- Chaltabagan Lohapatty (Maniktala): a well-known puja of the Maniktala area. One report mentions a theme based on a unique folk tradition, which we cannot confirm.
- Mohammad Ali Park, Kashi Bose Lane, Simla Byayam Samity, Bengal Club: names that appear in central and north-central Kolkata puja lists. Simla Byayam Samity is known for traditional worship and Birashtami, a martial arts display.
South Kolkata Pandals
South Kolkata is club territory: wide roads, big budgets and professional artist teams.
- Ekdalia Evergreen: known for large replicas and grand decoration. (2026 theme in the table above.)
- Suruchi Sangha (New Alipore): recognised for creative themes. (2026 theme in the table above.)
- Deshapriya Park (Rashbehari Avenue): an important south Kolkata venue, usually combined with other pandals nearby.
- Samaj Sebi Sangha (Lake Road/Rashbehari): known for social messages and artistic themes.
- Maddox Square (Ballygunge): one of the older pujas, with an open-square atmosphere, family and youth crowds and plenty of adda.
- Chetla Agrani, Ballygunge Cultural Association, Bosepukur Sitala Mandir: well-known southern committees. Reports on their themes conflict, so none is listed.
- Singhi Park, Tridhara Sammilani, Hindustan Park/Gariahat Hindustan Club, Badamtala Asar Sangha, Naktala Udayan Sangha, Mudiali, Jodhpur Park, Behala Nutan Dal: regulars on established south Kolkata lists. Themes change every year, so check each club’s page.
Salt Lake, Lake Town, Dum Dum and East Kolkata
- Sreebhumi Sporting Club (Lake Town): famous for big replicas every year. The Hawa Mahal replica is reported for 2026, so expect very heavy crowds in the evening.
- Lake Town Adhibasi Brinda: reported to be about 750 metres from Sreebhumi, so both can be covered on foot.
- Salt Lake FD Block (and CD/BD Blocks): among the best-known block pujas of Salt Lake.
- Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha and New Town pujas: names on the east Kolkata corridor. Plan your cab or metro in advance.
Howrah
We could not confirm up-to-date 2026 information on Howrah pandals from two sources, so no names are listed for now. This section will be updated as soon as reliable details are available.

Crowd and Timing Tips
- Calmest times: between Mahalaya and Shashthi, and on weekday mornings and afternoons. Several guides also suggest after midnight and the early hours (4-8 am).
- Heaviest crowds: the evenings and nights of Saptami (Sunday), Ashtami and Navami. Queues at the big pandals can run for hours.
- Dashami: Sindoor Khela and immersion day, so many pandals are not good for sightseeing.
- See the big ones early: visit crowded pandals on the morning of Shashthi or Saptami.
- Follow the arrangements: expect one-way lanes and barricades, and listen to the police and volunteers.
Safety and 2026 Rules
- Reports say the state government has announced a ban on liquor sales on Ashtami, a ban on DJs at pandals and immersion processions, and a ban on cranes during immersion.
- Red Road Carnival: reportedly not being held in 2026, so do not plan your trip around it. We will update this if the plan changes.
- Write a phone number on a child’s hand or keep a slip in the pocket, and fix a meeting point in case you get separated.
- Keep phones, wallets and jewellery safe from pickpockets. Carry a light bag, a charged phone and a power bank.
- Wear comfortable footwear, but remove shoes wherever asked inside the mandap. Carry an umbrella or raincoat in case of showers.
- Use dustbins and respect other people’s religious sentiments.

| Route 3: South clubs | Deshapriya Park, Samaj Sebi Sangha, Ekdalia, Maddox Square, finally Suruchi Sangha (New Alipore) | Start at Kalighat/Jatin Das Park; use an app cab for long gaps |
