Azim Premji Scholarship

Azim Premji Scholarship: Eligibility, Amount, How to Apply

When people search for “Azim Premji Scholarship”, they almost always mean the scholarship for girls offered by the Azim Premji Foundation. It gives Rs 30,000 a year to girls from government schools who take admission in a first undergraduate degree or diploma. This guide explains who can apply, how the money is paid and how to apply safely. Details were last checked in October 2026.

Which Azim Premji scholarship do people mean?

Two things get mixed up online. The first is the Azim Premji Scholarship for girl students, run by the Azim Premji Foundation (APF), the philanthropic organisation founded by Azim Premji. This is the one behind the huge search volume. The second is anything linked to Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, which is a separate institution with its own admissions. This article is only about the Foundation scholarship for girls in higher education.

The Foundation announced the scheme in 2025 and said it aimed to support up to 2.5 lakh girls across 18 states in the 2025-26 academic year. In 2024-25 it had been piloted in Madhya Pradesh and a few districts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, reaching over 25,000 girls, according to a news report on the announcement.

Who is eligible?

Based on the 2026-27 notice, a girl must meet all of these conditions:

  • She passed Class 10 and Class 12 as a regular student from a government school or college.
  • She has newly taken admission as a regular student in a recognised undergraduate degree or diploma programme of 2 to 5 years in the 2026-27 session.
  • The college or university can be government or a credible private institution anywhere in India.
  • She belongs to a disadvantaged background, but the notice we read does not give a rupee income cap. See “What we could not verify” below.

The scholarship is meant for a first-time course. A girl who already holds a degree and is starting another one should not assume she qualifies.

Eligible states and Union Territories

The scheme runs only in selected states, and the list has grown. The 2026-27 notice lists these: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu were not on the list we saw. The state that matters is where the girl studied Class 10 and 12, so check the official notice for how this is defined.

How much money, and how is it paid?

The scholarship is Rs 30,000 per year. The Foundation said it is paid directly into the student’s bank account, in two instalments a year, and can be used for tuition fees or other education-related costs. A news report gave a simple example: a four-year B.Sc. Nursing student would receive Rs 1.2 lakh over the course.

How to apply

  1. Open the official website, azimpremjifoundation.org, and go to the scholarship section. Type the address yourself rather than clicking a link from a message.
  2. Check that your state and course are covered in the current notice.
  3. Register and fill in your personal, school, bank and college details.
  4. Upload scanned documents in the required format. The notice says PDF, JPG or PNG files between 30 KB and 500 KB.
  5. Review everything and submit. Keep the acknowledgement.

Documents needed

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets
  • Passport-size photo with a plain background, taken in the last 6 months
  • Aadhaar card
  • Bank account details or passbook
  • Proof of admission, such as a bonafide certificate or tuition fee receipt
  • A signature on plain white paper was asked for in the 2025 round

A worked example

Take a girl from Bihar who studied Classes 10 and 12 in a government school and has taken admission in a three-year B.A. at a government college in 2026-27. She fits the profile, so she would register on the Foundation website, upload her marksheets, Aadhaar, bank details and bonafide certificate, and submit before the round closes. If selected, she would expect Rs 30,000 a year for the three years of the course. A girl who already completed a degree and is starting a second one should read the notice closely, because the scheme is described as support for a first-time course. A girl who studied Class 12 in a private school is also outside the stated rules, even if her family income is low.

It also helps to start early. Government offices that issue bonafide certificates and fee receipts can take a few days, and a blurred scan can delay a file. Make clean scans under 500 KB, name them clearly, and keep the originals safe, because verification may need them later.

Application dates

A notice for the 2026-27 session, reproduced by a college, shows two rounds: Round 1 from 10 to 31 August 2026 and Round 2 from 10 to 31 January 2027. We could not open the Foundation’s own page during research, so treat these as indicative and confirm the dates on azimpremjifoundation.org. Last checked October 2026.

Selection process and renewal

The sources we read do not describe how applications are ranked or verified, so we cannot say whether there is a merit list, interview or document check. On renewal, the notice says the scholarship is awarded for the full duration of the first degree or diploma, but it does not explain what a student must submit in later years. Expect some form of enrolment confirmation and watch the official page.

Beware of fake pages

A scholarship this popular attracts scam websites and WhatsApp forwards. Apply only through the Foundation’s official website. The application is free, so never pay anyone “registration” or “processing” money, and never share your OTP or bank PIN. If a page asks you to pay, it is not official.

What we could not verify

  • The Foundation’s own web page could not be opened, so figures come from a news report on the launch, a Careers360 article and a college notice.
  • Any family income limit, the selection method, and the exact renewal rules.
  • Whether the January 2027 round dates have changed.

Conclusion

The Azim Premji girls’ scholarship is a genuine, well-funded programme, but only for girls from government schools in listed states. Read the current notice on the Foundation’s website, keep your documents ready and apply only there.
