Government Jobs After 12th Pass: Exams, Age and Eligibility

After Class 12, you can apply for central government jobs through SSC CHSL, defence exams like NDA and Agniveer, railway recruitment boards, police constable exams and more. Most posts need only a 12th pass certificate, and the age limit usually falls between 17.5 and 27 years, with higher limits for some railway posts. All details below are as of October 2026, and you should always read the official notification before applying.

SSC CHSL: the most popular 12th pass exam

The Combined Higher Secondary Level exam recruits for Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant and Data Entry Operator posts in central government offices. For the 2025 cycle, SSC announced 3,131 Group C vacancies, applications were open until 18 July 2025, Tier-I was held in September 2025 and Tier-II was planned for February to March 2026 (as reported). Vacancy numbers change every year, so do not rely on an old figure. Always check ssc.gov.in.

NDA: officer entry after 12th

The National Defence Academy exam is held by UPSC, usually twice a year. It is for unmarried candidates and leads to officer training in the Army, Navy or Air Force. For the Army wing, any stream is accepted, but Air Force and Navy need Physics and Mathematics. The age limit is roughly 16.5 to 19.5 years, but the exact birth-date range is printed in each notification.

Agniveer: four-year defence service

The Agnipath scheme recruits soldiers for four years. For the Army, the age range is 17.5 to 21 years for all categories. Agniveer Technical requires 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English, with 50 percent aggregate. Agniveer Clerk and Store Keeper requires 10+2 in any stream with 60 percent aggregate. Agniveer General Duty requires only Class 10, so it is not a 12th pass job. The Navy and Air Force have their own eligibility, so check each force’s official recruitment site.

Railways: NTPC and Group D

RRB NTPC has separate graduate and undergraduate posts. The 12th pass posts include Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk, with an age limit of 18 to 33 years. Typing posts need a typing skill test. Note that RRB Group D (Level 1) generally requires Class 10 or ITI, not Class 12, so it does not belong to this list even though it is often searched with it.

Police constable and paramilitary

Constable recruitment in most states needs a 12th pass certificate, along with physical standards (height, chest, running). Rules are set by each state police board, so the age limit and number of posts differ widely. Delhi Police constable recruitment goes through SSC. For central forces like CISF, look at the official recruitment notices.

Vacancy patterns: what to expect

  • SSC CHSL is usually notified once a year, with applications in mid-year and exams a few months later.
  • NDA is held twice a year, with notices around December and May to June.
  • Railway boards announce vacancies in large batches every few years, and the number changes each time.
  • State police recruitment is irregular and depends on state budgets.
  • Agniveer rallies are held in different regions through the year.

We have not listed vacancy counts for most exams on purpose, because they change with every notification. Treat any number on a coaching website as a guide, and confirm it on the official site.

How to prepare after 12th

  1. Pick two or three exams that match your age and stream.
  2. Download the previous year syllabus and papers from the official site.
  3. Practise Maths, English, General Awareness and Reasoning daily.
  4. If you plan to join defence or police, start physical training early.
  5. Keep your documents ready: marksheet, ID proof, category certificate and photographs.

Choose the exam first, then check the official notification for age, qualification and dates. Beware of agents who promise jobs for money, since government recruitment is free of any such payment apart from the stated application fee.
